Production and Processing
Eucalyptus wood is one of the main species used for wood processing in Cambodia. The country has a significant timber sector, with eucalyptus being a key player. The wood is harvested and processed locally in mills, which produce various wood products such as stakes, poles, paper, and furniture. The main companies involved in this sector include Think Biotech, Camagra Investment Group, and Angkor Plywood.
Export
Cambodia exports a considerable amount of eucalyptus wood, primarily to Vietnam. In 2020, Cambodia exported around 13,410 cubic meters of roundwood. The export of eucalyptus wood contributes significantly to the country’s economy, with the total export value of primary timber products accounting for about 190 million US dollars.
Environmental Impact
Large-scale eucalyptus plantations have raised concerns about their impact on forests and rivers. The plantations can lead to deforestation and pollution, affecting local ecosystems and communities. For instance, the Pheapimex Group’s plan to develop 300,000 hectares of land with eucalyptus trees for a pulp and paper mill has been controversial due to the potential environmental damage.
Sustainability Efforts
There are ongoing efforts to create sustainable sources of wood through eucalyptus plantations. These efforts aim to reduce the import of processed wood and support the local economy4. The government and private sector are working together to ensure that eucalyptus plantations are managed sustainably to minimize environmental impact4.
Eucalyptus wood plays a significant role in Cambodia’s timber industry, but it’s essential to balance economic benefits with environmental sustainability.
